Edward Burtynsky - Vital Water-to Survive

Another powerful series by Photographer Edward Burtynsky that captures how humans treat water - a resource that is vital to all known forms of life on earth.

The photographer explains: 'While trying to accommodate the growing needs of an expanding, and very thirsty civilization, we are reshaping the Earth in colossal ways.'

'we are also capable of engineering our own demise.'

The photographer states: 'Water is intermittently introduced as a victim, a partner, a protagonist, a lure, a source, an end, a threat and a pleasure.'

Burtynsky, often concentrates on the 'visual and physical effects of the lack of water, giving its absence an even more powerful presence.'

A teardrop formed by the Cerro Prieto Geothermal Power Station in Baja, Mexico, 2012 - (If the water could talk to us, what will be the message?)

Pivot Irrigation #11, High Plains, Texas Panhandle, USA 2011 - the circles are a reminder of the crop circles and messages. In the Holy Bible, end times have been foretold - thought and intention powerfully impacts water, so imagine what prayer can do.

'Rice Terraces #2, in Western Yunnan Province, China, 2012' - we go to the stores, buy what we want and rice, I was just looking a few moments ago at Basmatti rice. There are people in our world who are grateful for a bowl of rice a day....imagine.

'Control: VeronaWalk in Naples, Florida, USA, 2012' - Another connection with Naples being in Italy too. In looking at this photograph I am reminded of the Palms in Dubai. Everything seems to be so in order and organised. 'Control' is used.

Marine Aquaculture #1, in Luoyuan Bay, Fujian Province, China, 2012

Vital resource: Greenhouses on the Almira Peninsula in Spain, 2010. The meaning of Almira is "aristocratic lady, princess". Almirah is also named in New Delhi India.

If we do not cultivate the land, no food will grow. If we do not plant fruit trees, the bees will not come and pollinate, multiply and supply. Trees emit oxygen and the process to balance our earth requires water and oxygen too. Without both we perish.

Stepwell in Sagar Kund Baori, Bundi, Rajasthan, India, 2010

High-rise hotels cluster next to the sea Benidorm, Spain - When looking at an overview of an area on Googlemaps, this is how instant travel is possible..

'Pivot irrigation south of Yuma, Arizona, USA, 2011.

'Power: Xiaolangdi Dam on the Yellow River in Henan Province, China, in 2011' - before seeing this image I had a rush of energy on my left leg. Water has been used to generate electricity in history. Not being technical, the experts who are know how to harness every resource and as human beings people have had their power taken away from them.

Divide: The Navajo Indian Reservation and suburb, Arizona, USA - In looking at the most beautiful photograph, there is Navajo Bay іn Greece. A connection is made. One of the crop circles have shown the American Indian and Greek Key - this is it.

'Ritual: Hindu pilgrims gather to bathe in a sacred river at Haridwar, India, in 2010' - prayer is a ritual, baptism is a ritual and this cleansing is too. In all the positives with a focus to purify mind body and soul. This is our choice.

'Other worldly: The Thjorsá River in Iceland, 2012' - deep blue shades of water that just does not look real. On our planet some amazing unspoilt locations few people will see in person so sharing on the internet gives us a glimpse.

Fronds: Dryland farming in Monegros County, Aragon, Spain 2010 - like a tree of life on the ground and yet it looks like drift wood. Two shades how two trees (peoples) side by side and integrated. The ancient Kingdom of Aragon connects with the Philippines.

The Colorado River Delta, Sonora, Mexico, 2012

Rolling hills: Dryland Farming #24, Monegros County, Aragon, Spain 2010 - such diversity that spans to different parts of our world - colour, beauty, sparse spaces and land mass that invites people to consider, if we are to start again, would we do anything differently? If we do not take care of our planet, it will not take care of humanity.

Edward Burtynsky has produced a book, a documentary called Watermark and several multimedia offerings, including an iPad app.

His photography is showing at the Howard Greenberg gallery and also the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, both in New York City, until 2 November.

Important photographs that I wanted to share here to give more people the opportunity to see from the eyes of the person who captures what they can see.

Much appreciation to the Photographer for his gift.
Peace, love and best wishes
