HMS Ark Royal cost £320million to build in 1981 and after 30 years service has been sold to ship recycling firm Leyal for £2.9m. It will sail the seas to be taken 2,000 miles to Turkey.
The Ark Royal is the fifth ship named the Ark Royal since 1587.
The decision to scrap the vessel took place by the Coalition in the 2010 Defence Review. 'Plans to turn the ship into a museum, heliport, nightclub, school or casino fell by the wayside.'
Diverse 'plans' were identified. There is a reason for everything.
